Ros Stanley

Profession: Social worker
Supervisor: Dr Justin Sauer (consultant psychiatrist)
Project title: BME Dementia: Is an inner London memory service meeting the needs of the local population?

Why did you apply for a BRC research secondment?

I'd had the idea for this piece of research for some time. It was directly relevant to the clinical work I do and had the potential to improve the service we provide to service users from BME communities. But, it was proving impossible to get the idea off the ground and find enough time to follow it through amid the pressures of clinical work. I applied for the secondment to give me some protected time to pursue the project.

What did you achieve during this secondment?

I developed my own knowledge and skills in quantitative research and also carried out a project which was useful to my team. My supervisor and I are currently preparing a paper for publication based on the outcomes.

What would you say to other people thinking of applying?

Go for it - I really enjoyed having the protected time to pursue my research interests and there has been a direct benefit to my clinical work as a result.
