The LUCI project (Locating Useful Clinical Information), has been shortlisted at the HSJ Awards 2026, for the Data Driven Transformation Award.
This award is about recognising NHS initiatives that harness the power of data to bring positive change in the delivery and planning of care, and where data sharing has made a real difference.
LUCI uses advanced analytics to support population mental health management by helping clinicians find and understand clinical information more effectively.
David Codling, Consultant Psychiatrist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and Clinical Co-Lead of the Clinical Informatics Service, NIHR BRC: Maudsley, said:
“This shortlisting recognises so much of our hard work in the project. That includes our fantastic patient and carer oversight group who ensure that we are targeting things that really matter to the people who use our services; our team who works so hard designing, building and implementing LUCI; and the clinicians who have worked with us to ensure that we are supporting genuinely transformative workflows.
We are very grateful to the Maudsley Charity, who have kindly funded and guided us to take this from a proof-of-concept to an impactful trust-wide intervention, our LUCI champions who have been key to driving adoptions and impact, and all those in SLaM who have opened doors for LUCI across the Trust.”
LUCI currently works with data from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust within the CRIS system – another NIHR BRC: Maudsley informatics initiative which holds data from electronic health records (electronic health records (EHRs)) in a de-identified format. It applies natural language processing and open source visualisation tools developed within the CogStack platform which is also supported by Maudsley BRC in collaboration with NIHR UCLH BRC and partner trusts.
LUCI was awarded £1.7 million in funding from Maudsley Charity to build on and improve previous information retrieval systems. It has proven to be a more powerful, user-friendly, and reliable tool which is being used across the Trust to help teams quickly access the information they need to make good decisions about treatment.
