On Wednesday 17 June we welcomed a cohort of 12 Foundation Year 1 (FY1) resident doctors from across the UK to the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) Mental Health Mission FY1 Research Taster Day at the NIHR BRC: Maudsley and Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King’s College London.
The day was hosted by Professor Rina Dutta, our Academic Career Development Lead, as part of our BRC’s portfolio of training opportunities and capacity development for both clinicians and non-clinical scientists.
A full programme showcased the breadth of mental health research and clinical academic careers, including:
- Neuroimaging and experimental medicine – including ketamine research and biomarker discovery
- Interactive mock scanner and research facility experiences
- “Ask an IAT!”: honest conversations about clinical academic pathways
- Keynote lightning talks from Executive Dean, Professor Matthew Hotopf, Head of School of Neuroscience, Professor Mark Richardson and Regius Professor of Psychiatry and Head of School of Academic Psychiatry, Professor Ed Bullmore
- Genomics and BioResource, including the GLAD Study
- Brain banking and neuropathology in action
- Cutting-edge eating disorders research – spanning digital tools and neuromodulation
A particular highlight was the level of engagement and curiosity from the group, and the generosity of colleagues across IoPPN and the NIHR BRC: Maudsley in sharing their work and career journeys.
Early exposure to research matters. If we want to grow the next generation of clinical academics in mental health, this is where it starts. Thank you to all who contributed, and to an outstanding FY1 cohort for bringing such energy to the day.
The Mental Health Mission is being delivered through the NIHR Translational Research Collaboration: Mental Health, which was co-founded by NIHR BRC: Maudsley.
