Medichec

Medichec is an app that helps to identify medications that might have a negative effect on cognitive function and / or cause other adverse effects in older people.

Medichec analyses medication that may have anticholinergic effects. Anticholinergic effects result when a medicine prevents the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from having its usual effects in the body; typical anticholinergic side effects that affect the brain include impaired concentration, confusion, and memory impairment. Medichec defines the extent of the effect and the cumulative implications of multiple drugs. Medications with a high anticholinergic burden can increase the risk of cognitive impairment in older people and research evidence indicates associations with an increased risk of developing dementia. The Anticholinergic Effect on Cognition (AEC) scale aims to help clinicians to identify which drugs have an anticholinergic effect on cognition and defines the extent of this effect.

Medichec was led by Delia Bishara, Justin Sauer, Christoph Mueller and Robert Stewart in collaboration with Mindwave Ventures, part-funded by the NIHR Maudsley BRC.
