People with severe mental illness at 50 per cent higher risk of death following COVID-19 infection

New research from King’s College London has found that people in the UK with severe mental illness were at increased risk of death from all causes following COVID-19 infection compared to those without severe mental illness.

Healthcare workers in England experience PTSD at twice the rate of the general public

New research part-funded by NIHR Maudsley BRC, and led by the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King’s College London in collaboration with the NIHR ARC North Thames at University College London and NHS Trusts across England, has found that healthcare workers experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at twice the rate of the general public.

New study reveals possible brain mechanisms behind COVID-19 delirium

Researchers from King’s College London have shown that when brain cells are directly exposed to blood taken from COVID-19 patients with delirium, there is an increase in cell death and a decrease in the generation of new brain cells. Delirium represents a state of confusion indicating that, in these patients, the COVID-19 infection had impacted the brain.

New research suggests a causal link between blood group and severe COVID-19

A new study has analysed over 3000 proteins to identify which are causally linked to the development of severe COVID-19. This is the first study to assess such a large number of proteins for their connection to COVID-19. The findings provide insight into potential new targets for approaches to treat and prevent severe COVID-19.
