Honorary Degree for Professor Dame Til Wykes

Professor Dame Til Wykes was awarded an honorary degree from York St John on Wednesday 15 November at a ceremony at York Minster.

Dame Til Wykes, is Professor of Clinical Psychology and Rehabilitation, and Vice Dean Psychology and Systems Sciences, at King’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience. She received a Doctor of Health Sciences (honoris causa) and gave a speech to an audience of graduands, their families and friends, and staff and guests of the University.

Professor Wykes said, ‘I am so pleased to receive this honorary degree, and meet so many York St John Graduands. The ceremony was fantastic, and it was a privilege to be able to speak to my fellow graduands, their families and friends, and staff and guests in York Minster about the stigma surrounding mental illness.’

Additional Honorary degree recipients included children’s campaigner Baroness Floella Benjamin OBE, actress Dame Penelope Wilton, and Steve Rowe, Chief Executive of Marks & Spencer. Also being recognised were the Yorkshire Rows, the oldest all-female crew to row across the Atlantic who started learning to row at the Guy Fawkes Boat Club in York.

Professor Karen Stanton, Vice Chancellor of York St John University, said, ‘This year’s honorary graduands are an especially motivational group of people. 

‘We are delighted to recognise the incredible impact they have made in their respective fields with an honorary degree. We hope their inspirational stories will further encourage our students to achieve their potential and to make a positive contribution to the world.’

The Honorary Degrees were presented at the graduation ceremonies in York Minster by Chancellor of York St John University and Archbishop of York, The Most Reverend and Right Honourable Dr John Sentamu.
