Recognising loneliness in people with substance use disorders

The recent pandemic revealed a close link between feeling lonely and increased substance use which, in turn, can damage relationships and create a cycle of loneliness. In this blog Jonathan Crabtree, Post Graduate researcher at the IoPPN and the NIHR Maudsley BRC CEDI lead, Dr Mariana Pinto da Costa, a Senior Lecturer at the IoPPN and a Consultant Psychiatrist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, explore the link between loneliness and substance use disorders using real-world clinical data.

Does the ethnicity of mental health research participants reflect the eligible population?

eLIXIR BiSL - How early life data is changing our understanding of health

The Early Life Cross-Linkage in Research, Born in South London (eLIXIR BiSL) project uses opt-out consent to collect routine maternity and neonatal clinical patient data, mental health data and primary care data. It is also collecting blood samples from mothers to build a unique bioresource that can be used to investigate the underlying biological processes involved in pregnancy and those influenced by environmental factors. NIHR Maudsley BRC and King’s College London researchers are already using this valuable resource. In this blog Principal Investigators Professor Lucilla Poston and Professor Laura A Magee, along with Research Associate Tisha Dasgupta explores the potential of the eLIXIR cohort to enable research to address health inequalities and improve services.

CEDI Impact Award winners announced

The first Culture, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Impact Award winners have been announced. This award recognizes and celebrates the efforts of researchers supported by the NIHR Maudsley BRC who have made significant contributions to research and who promote equality, diversity, and inclusion in their work.

EDI representatives for BRC announced

As part of NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy we have appointed 14 representatives to support our work. The NIHR Maudsley BRC themes and core programmes each have an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) lead researcher. They are responsible for championing local EDI initiatives.
